This comprehensive third series monograph updates and expands the two prior fascicles on this topic by including numerous new disease entities, as well as new diagnostic techniques. Although the emphasis continues to be placed on the diagnostic role of standard radiographs and standard H&E-stain light microscopy, the role of CT-scanning, magnetic resonance imaging, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and other more advanced methodologies is presented where appropriate. The text begins with a review of the structure of normal bone, followed by methods for the examination and processing of osseous specimens. An overview of potential radiographic findings in osseous neoplasms is presented. This section should be of particular benefit to pathologists, as it emphasizes the pivotal role of radio-graphic study in the diagnosis of osseous neoplasia. The body of the text is devoted to thorough, up-to-date discussions of the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic features of osseous neoplasms and synovial lesions. Major sections are devoted to neoplasms of osseous, cartilaginous, vascular, fibrous, giant cell, small cell, and hematopoietic differentiation. A series of chapters on non-neoplastic lesions mimicking osseous neoplasms includes multiple new entities. The expanding role of the pathologist in determining prognosis and adjuvant treatment based on the histologic appearance of sarcomas receiving pre-excision chemotherapy is discussed in detail. Finally, the text includes chapters reviewing a variety of neoplastic and neoplasm-like proliferations of the synovium. The text is 300 pages in length and contains 325 high-quality illustrations. The bibliography is considerably longer than in prior editions and includes up-to-date as well as classical references in osseous and synovial neoplasia. This book should be an indispensable reference for radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, pathologists in training, and practicing pathologists involved in the diagnosis and treatment of osseous and synovial neoplasms.
